Kedarkantha (Bal Kedara) Bugyal

Kedarkantha mean "the throat of Bhagwan Shri Har Mahadeva". As per legend of Bhagwan Shri Har Shiva was wandering in Kedarkantha Bugyal in his incarnation as a Bull (Nandi) to hide from the Pandavas. While wandering in the Kedar-Kantha bugyal, he was identified by local dwellers who disturbed his peace. Therefore he disappeared from the Kedar-Kantha Bugyal and went to Kedara Valley (presently Shri Kedarnath Dham). That is why this place is also called "Bal Kedara".

Local villagers marked the place where his trident was erected and they believe that this protect them and keep the valley replenished. Another legend says that when Bheema identified and tried to catch Bhagwan Shri Har Shiva while wandering as a Bull in Kedar Valley, he divided his body parts and undergrounded in order to disappear. His "Kantha" (the throat) appears here. Construction of a temple was attempted, but incompleted because of some unholy event.

This place offers scenic views of the Himalyan ranges- Nanda Ghunti, Swargarohini, Kalanag peak, Bandarpunch mountains, Yamunotri range, Jaonti, Gangotri, Draupadi ka Danda, Jorkanden along with Rupin valley and Har ki Dun valley. The trek to Panwali Kantha Bugyal starts from Devjani or Sankari village and passes through lush vegetation of rhododendrons, oak and deodar forests.In winter, it is covered with snow and most popular winter trek.
